This writing contest takes place three times per year. For the current session (open 7/1/2017-9/30/2017), applicants must write an essay about what nature's role is in their life. EXPIRED Deadline 10/31/2017 - Voice of Democracy Annual Scholarship-"American History: Our Hope for the Future": 9th-12th Graders may apply to this theme based audio-recording essay competition. Requires application and 3-5 minute audio essay that meets the criteria of originality, content and delivery. Special accommodations available for applicants with hearing and speech disabilities. EXPIRED Deadline 11/7/2017 - Prudential Spirit of the Community Award: Seniors who've made a difference by volunteering in their community over the past year may apply. Complete the application and the student/parent agreement. Requires a certifier. Go to the "Certification" page to email or print out instructions for your certifier. You must deliver these instructions to your certifier by November 8, 2016. Your certifier can be your school principal or the head of a county 4-H organization, Girl Scout council, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network affiliate. Your certifier has until November 18, 2016, to review applications online and select Local Honoree(s) from the applicants in your school or organization, and nominate them for state-level judging. Worth $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C.

EXPIRED Deadline 2/22/2018 - MEA Scholarship (Michigan Education Association): This scholarship is for seniors who are a dependent of MEA member or MEA-Retired member in good standing, will attend a post-secondary school as an undergraduate student of a Michigan public community/junior college, four-year degree-granting institution, or vocational training institution that grants a degree, certification or license. Those attending the following private institutions ONLY are also eligible: Baker College-Flint/Owosso; University of Detroit–Mercy; Adrian College; Finlandia University; and Albion College. (The aforementioned private institutions are existing local MEA affiliates.) Note: Children of MEA officers, fund trustees, and MEA staff are not eligible. EXPIRED Deadline 3/2/2018 - GreenStone Farm Credit: Senior applicants planning to study an agriculture related field. Requires a 3.0+ GPA; demonstrate participation and leadership in school, community and agricultural activities; submit complete application with two letters of recommendation written by non-family members by published deadline. Valued at $2,000 each to selected students attending a four-year college program and $1,000 each to selected students attending a two-year college program.
EXPIRED Deadline 3/2/2018 - Life Lessons Scholarship: A 500 word essay or 3 minute video about how a death of a parent or legal guardian affected your life financially (college planning) and emotionally. 34 winners will be chosen to receive scholarships valued between $5,000 and $15,000.
EXPIRED Deadline 3/2/2018 - Society of Women Engineers (SWE)-Detroit Section Scholarship: Female seniors planning to pursue an engineering degree at a university or college with a ABET accredited program. Requires a 3.0 minimum GPA, application form, official transcript, and essay. Application requires your counselor's signature. Application submission can be either postmarked mail or sent by email no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2017.
EXPIRED Deadline 3/5/2018 - Sonoco Scholarship: Seniors who are a dependent of a qualified Sonoco employee (plant on Chipman in Owosso) may apply. Requires online application, transcript with SAT or ACT scores, 2 x teacher recommendation letters, 500 word essay, and demonstrate need. Sonoco prefers online applications to be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on March 5th: however late applications, as well as ALL supporting documents must be submitted no later than March 15th. Valued between $2,000-$8,000 each award. 10 x awards will be given across all company plant regions nation-wide including Owosso, MI.
EXPIRED Deadline 3/9/2018 - Shiawassee Community Foundation (SCF): The SCF is a local area nonprofit organization and the packet includes dozens of scholarships. There is no limit to the number of scholarship a senior can apply for. However, applying is quite time consuming, especially when applying for more than one. It is important to read through each scholarship and its unique criteria carefully before applying, making sure you qualify.

(1) Transcripts - Please order your electronic 7th semester transcript to be sent to SCF by going to www.reachhigherohs.com/transcript and clicking on the "Parchment" logo to enter the custom OHS Parchment Portal. Be sure to click "Hold for Grades" when ordering.
(2) Letters of Recommendation - You must request letters of recommendation 3-4 weeks before scholarship deadlines. The outline to help with this process is available in the SSC.

EXPIRED Deadline 3/15/2018 - Capitol Area Chapter MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) Scholarship: Students (under age 24) who are children of an active-duty, reserve, (or) National Guard parent who died on active service (or) children of severely wounded in the line of duty since September 2001 (as defined as Traumatic SGLI) are eligible to apply. Requires registration on the MOAA Scholarship Fund's Educational Assistance Programs prior to applying. EXPIRED Deadline 3/31/2018 - Lighthouse Guild Legally Blind Scholarship: Seniors who are legally blind may apply. Requires proof of blindness, transcript with SAT scores, 3 letters of recommendation, and two 500 word essays: (1) describe your educational and personal goals and (2) the influence of an outstanding teacher on your education. Up to 20 national recipients will be chosen. Valued up to $10,000.

EXPIRED Deadline 3/31/2018 - Thurgood Marshall Scholarship: Seniors planning to pursue a degree in a Criminal Justice field and can demonstrate a 3.0 GPA and financial need including parent sharing income documentation. Requires the submission of an application, photograph, acceptance letter to postsecondary institution in Michigan that officially supports student's special needs, letters of recommendation, and a written or recorded essay (goals, educational plans, community service, and leadership skills). Granted up to $1,500 - funds can be used for transportation, special equipment, tutoring, and tuition.
EXPIRED Deadline 4/13/2018 - Van Gilder Family Foundation: Seniors with a full time 4 year degree and career focus, with honorable character and a 2.5 GPA or better may apply. Requires application, 140 character Tweet about your character, and 2 essays: (1) 400 word essay must answers the question of "how your life speaks about who you are and how has in influenced the person you have become." (2) 500 word essay must state your ambitions and how you plan to achieve them-as well as why you feel you are deserving of the scholarship. This local scholarship will give away two (2) $2,500 scholarships to two Owosso High School seniors. Submit applications to Mrs. Pilon in the SSC no later than 3:00 p.m. on April 13th.
EXPIRED Deadline 4/15/2018 - Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police-MLEEF Youth Scholarship Award (MACP): Seniors must submit the application and documents by April 10th to Mrs. Pilon in the SSC in order to be considered. The process requires OHS to narrow applications down to one (1) applicant to continue on and be submitted by OHS to the MACP for further consideration. OHS must mail the chosen applicant's submission to Okemos before the MACP's deadline. Value is estimated at approximately $2,000. Submissions MUST be to Mrs. Pilon by Monday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m.
EXPIRED Deadline 4/15/2018 - Shiawassee County Historical Society-James Oliver Curwood Scholarship: Seniors whose parents are residents of Shiawassee County may apply. No GPA minimum is set. EXPIRED Deadline 4/16/2018 - Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships: Seniors who are (1) social and environmental responsibility-cultural awareness minded AND (2) majoring in and pursuing a degree in fine arts, graphic design, illustration, interactive design/motion graphics, and photography should apply. Requires proof of 2.0 or higher GPA, financial need, max 600 word written "statement of purpose", brief autobiography explaining how your experiences have influenced your creative work and your career plans, and how you see yourself in the future as a creator contributing to the community at large. And although it is not a requirement, minority status is a significant factor considered in the award decisions. Must be a US citizen or green card holder. Value ranges from $2,000-$5,000 per award. EXPIRED Deadline (April 27th) 5/11/2018 - AAA Michigan's School Safety Patrol Scholarship: Seniors who served as a AAA School Safety Patrol member in Michigan, are in good academic standing, have a strong record of participation in the community and extra-curricular activities, has a 3.0 GPA or better, at least a score of 21 on the ACT or 950 on the SAT, may apply. Requires an application, minimum 2.5 or above GPA, honorable character (good citizenship), list of extra-curricular activities and leadership positions during high school, and 500 word essay sharing your goals and aspirations.
